Cairnwatch Keep
Beneath Cairnwatch Peak lies a world the surface of Opaline has forgotten ~ a labyrinth of stone, shadow, and ruin that predates the town itself. What began as crude pioneer tunnels carved into the mountain’s belly slowly evolved into the sanatorium’s sprawling understructure, a place where suffering seeped into the walls and the Buried God’s dreaming warped the air. When the sanatorium fell into decay, the Blood‑Marked slipped into its abandoned catacombs like returning predators, reshaping the depths into a hidden refuge of opulent ruin and predatory grace. Today, those same chambers lie directly beneath the Church of the Crimson Dawn, a sanctum above and a haven below, each feeding the other in ways neither fully understands. The result is a subterranean kingdom of echoes and hunger ~ a place where the past lingers, the mountain breathes, and the Blood‑Marked wait for whatever the shifting valley brings next. She is Cairnwatch Keep.
A Timeline of Origins, Ruin, and Rebirth
1800s ~ The First Tunnels
Long before the sanatorium existed, the earliest settlers carved crude tunnels into the base of Cairnwatch Peak. These were meant as storm shelters, cold‑storage chambers, and escape routes during harsh winters. But the mountain had its own agenda. The deeper the workers dug, the more the stone seemed to “open” for them ~ revealing natural caverns, strange mineral formations, and pockets of air that felt unnervingly warm. These early tunnels became the skeleton of what would one day house the Blood‑Marked. Even then, disappearances were whispered about. Something in the dark was watching.
1900–1920 ~ The Sanatorium Rises
When the Opaline Sanatorium was constructed, its architects expanded the old tunnels into a sprawling network of basements, treatment chambers, and storage vaults. Officially, these spaces were for medical supplies and quarantine. Unofficially, they became the site of experiments, occult curiosities, and rituals performed by staff who had begun to sense the mountain’s strange pull. The Buried God’s dreaming seeped into the walls, warping the air and drawing the Blood‑Marked closer. They began slipping into the tunnels at night, feeding on the forgotten and the dying, learning the layout long before the town realized anything was wrong.
1940s–1960s ~ The Blood‑Marked Claim the Depths
As the sanatorium’s reputation darkened, the Blood‑Marked arrived in force. They found the underground chambers perfect: cold, labyrinthine, and saturated with the residue of suffering. Under Mother Virelle’s guidance, they carved out hidden dens, feeding rooms, and ritual spaces deeper than any human had ever reached. They reinforced the tunnels with stolen stonework and scavenged metal, creating a subterranean refuge that felt half‑temple, half‑predator’s nest. When the sanatorium finally closed, the Blood‑Marked simply sank deeper into the earth, retreating into the catacombs like they had always belonged there.
1970s–1990s ~ The Opulent Ruins Take Shape
Left abandoned, the sanatorium rotted above while the Blood‑Marked transformed the depths below. They expanded into natural caverns, discovering underground waterfalls, opalite formations, and chambers shaped by the mountain itself. They adorned these spaces with stolen relics, carved symbols, and makeshift architecture that blended elegance with decay. Over decades, the Haven became a labyrinth of glowing pools, broken columns, ritual circles, and half‑collapsed halls ~ a place where beauty and ruin coexisted. The Blood‑Marked called it the Cairnwatch Keep, though outsiders would never know the name.
2010–2026 ~ The Keep Beneath Cairnwatch Peak
Today, Cairnwatch Keep is a sprawling, opulent ruin beneath Cairnwatch Peak ~ a hidden world of waterfalls, ancient stone, and decaying grandeur. The cult above unknowingly sustains the predators below, their chants echoing faintly through the vents and cracks in the stone. The Blood‑Marked move through The Keep like shadows, feeding, plotting, and waiting. The mountain is stirring again, and The Keep hums with anticipation. Cairnwatch Peak has become more than a refuge ~ it is a throne room waiting for its rightful rulers.
