Opaline: The Veiled

THE HAUNTING OF OPALINE, COLORADO.

Opaline is a mountain town built on old stone, older secrets, and a history that refuses to stay buried. Nestled deep in the Rocky Mountains, it looks unassuming at first glance: a scattering of weather‑worn houses, a main street that shuts down early, and a ridge line that looms like a watchful sentinel. But beneath the quiet surface lies a valley shaped by forces far older than its settlers. The land itself hums with a strange resonance ~ storms gather too quickly, animals behave with uncanny instinct, and the moonlight clings to the peak in ways that defy explanation. Outsiders feel it the moment they cross the county line, a subtle pressure behind the ribs, a sense that something ancient is paying attention.

Long before Opaline had a name, the mountain was already alive in its own way. Beneath its highest point lies the Buried God, a primordial force whose dreaming shaped the valley’s geography, its flora and fauna, and the instincts of those who would one day become its hidden guardians. The Buried God is not worshipped so much as endured ~ a presence woven into the bedrock, influencing the land in ways subtle and violent. Its slumber created fertile soil, strange plant growth, and the luminous waterfalls deep within the mountain. Its moods ripple through the valley, stirring storms, awakening instincts, and bending the supernatural toward its will. Every lineage in Opaline feels its pull differently, and every one of them has built their identity around surviving its influence.

Over centuries, three hidden lineages emerged, each shaped by the mountain’s power in their own way. They walk among the townsfolk unseen, bound to Opaline by blood, instinct, or devotion. Their histories are tangled with the land’s, their rivalries older than the town itself. Though they rarely trust one another, they maintain a fragile balance to keep the valley from tipping into chaos. Their stories are carved into the mountain’s bones ~ in the ruins of old sanctuaries, in the scars left by ancient conflicts, and in the rituals still practiced under moonlight. Each lineage has its own truth about the mountain, its own interpretation of the Buried God, and its own claim to the valley’s destiny.

Opaline’s history is marked by conflict, secrecy, and uneasy alliances. The most devastating of these was the Crimson War of the late 1800s, when a territorial dispute beneath the mountain erupted into open violence. Sacred spaces were shattered, ancient wards broken, and the heart of the mountain nearly extinguished. Though the lineages rebuilt in the decades that followed, the scars remain ~ in the damaged chambers of Caern La Luna Cae, in the whispered grudges passed down through generations, and in the tension that still simmers beneath every interaction. The valley remembers, even when its people try to forget.

Now, in 2026, Opaline stands at a crossroads. The mountain’s energy is shifting again, stronger and more volatile than it has been in a century. The lineages feel it in their bones.  The townsfolk sense something stirring in the woods, in the storms, in the quiet moments between breaths. Whatever is waking beneath Opaline Peak, whatever the Buried God dreams next, the valley is bracing for change. And in a town where every shadow has a story and every story has teeth, change is never gentle.
